Lucy Downes, Green Party Candidate for Hertford and Stortford, Calls on Environment Agency to Open Vital River Lea Footpath Link

Today, Lucy Downes, Green Party candidate for Hertford and Stortford constituency, called on the Environment Agency (EA) to take immediate action to ensure the temporary Victoria Cut footbridge on the River Lea footpath in Ware is reopened immediately and remains open until a new bridge can be installed.
“This footpath is a vital link for cyclists and walkers using the River Lea footpath for recreation, but also an important access route from the town to the station and the college on weekdays. Exercise for pleasure and for health, as well as avoiding rush hour polluted air in the High Street, make it really important that despite government cuts the Environment Agency lives up to its responsibilities and keeps this footbridge open,” said Lucy Downes.
The bridge has had to be closed because years of lack of maintenance by the EA have made it dangerous. The EA does not want to bear the £1000 per week cost they claim it will take to keep the temporary bridge open. This will cut the Lea footpath for many months. The EA is trying to push responsibility for the bridge onto the County Council. The Green Party feels that despite the Tory government cutting the EA budget by more than 55% since 2010/11, the agency needs to continue to meet its responsibilities. Lucy Downes is writing to Charlie Thompson, Operations Manager at the EA responsible for this work to call on him to reopen the temporary bridge, and keep it open until the permanent bridge is in place. She is also calling on all Hertford and Stortford candidates to back her call.
“It’s really important for health and recreation that the Lea footpath is open, we have a crisis of obesity, asthma and other conditions that are helped by people being able to exercise in clean air along routes like the River Lea. As Green MP for Hertford and Stortford I will make this, and similar projects a top priority,” said Lucy.
