Outcry to have Bishop Stortford Rhodes Art Centre centre renamed

Written by on 15 June 2020

The Stortford Against Rhodes campaign has written to Julie Marson MP and Bishop’s Stortford town councillors, calling for them to support their campaign to rename the Rhodes Art Centre.

The Stortford Against Rhodes campaign has said: “Books teach history, statues and buildings glorify history. We do not believe that the legacy of Cecil Rhodes is one that deserves to be celebrated in this way. There are many local people who are far more deserving of having their name on the Art Complex.”

In their statement earlier this week, the Rhodes Birthplace Trust have committed to changing the name of their organisation as they form a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

However, they have not yet ruled out the use of the Rhodes name in any future branding of the Art Complex.
