Work is progressing on an exciting project to create an upgraded “forward-thinking” community hub and venue in Sawbridgeworth.

The refurbishment of Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, which began last August, aims to expand the popular centre in The Forebury to reflect the town’s “new contemporary lifestyle” and place community engagement at its core.

The expanded centre will build upon existing activities such as toddler groups, performing arts, jazz and Ibiza nights, which cater for all ages from young families to the University of the Third Age (over 55s).

A press release from the centre says that the new facility will complement the existing spaces for hire and will feature a dance studio, meeting rooms and a technology area designed to serve as a training hub for technophobes and a hot desk hub for like-minded creatives.

The foyer will undergo refurbishment, including the addition of stairs and an all-ability lift to the new first floor.

Extension of the centre is being carried out by Greg Payne GP Refurbishments, whose family regularly use it.

Funding for the scheme has been boosted by grants of £72,000 from the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Village Halls Fund, £45,000 from East Herts Council and £5,000 from Stansted Airport Community Fund.

So far, foundations and brickwork for the small infill extension have been completed, with three-quarters of the walls, roof and windows formed. Roof panel installation and window placement will follow in the coming weeks. Once this work is completed, the foyer work will start on the inside. The plan is for the new centre to open in the summer.
