A man has died and another is in a serious condition in hospital after a car crashed into the River Stort in Harlow on Thursday night (September 21).

Police were called to reports that a vehicle had left the road in Burnt Mill Lane and come to stop in the water shortly after 10pm.

Two men in their 20s were pulled out of the car and taken to hospital.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “Sadly, one of the men has died. The other remains in a serious condition.

“At this stage we don’t believe another vehicle was involved but we are investigating the circumstances which led up to the incident.”

Burnt Mill Lane, near Harlow Town railway station, connects the A414 Fifth Avenue with Eastwick Road, which leads to High Wych and Sawbridgeworth, and crosses the Stort at two points.
